Smuggler's Notch, Vermont

Description

Smuggler’s Notch Resort is located in the heart of Vermont’s beautiful Green Mountains, set in over 3000 acres of native forest. The resort lies on route 108, just a few miles north of Smuggler’s Notch itself, a narrow ravine which reputedly was a favorite short-cut for cattle smugglers (drivers beware – the pass is closed in winter, so you cannot approach the resort from the south). The resort has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most family-friendly ski resorts in the US. The provision of both on and off slope activities for kids is extensive, with an amazing amount for the little ones to do from morning till night.

There are two valley centers – the main ski village, and, lying about 11/2 miles south-east along 108, the Madonna/Sterling base. The two are connected by ski trails, and also a free shuttle bus. The skiing is spread over three big peaks, Morse, above the ski village, and Madonna and Sterling mountains, above the second separate base area.

The best of Smuggler’s for Experts are the runs which start at the top of Madonna peak. Five double black trails, from the exciting Freefall with several big steps, to the very steep FIS, will fully test your mastery of the sport. Also try the only triple black in the North-East, the Black Hole, a steep line through the trees.

Much of the terrain at Smuggler’s is for Intermediates, especially on Sterling and Madonna mountains. Rumrunner off the top of Sterling, and Drifter off the top of Madonna are two ‘must-do’ trails.

First Timer’s will feel at home at the efficiently run ski school, rather pompously monikered the Snow Sport University, hopefully ‘graduating’ to the easy slopes on Morse mountain. Those apprehensive of chair lifts will appreciate the Mogul Mouse’s Magic Lift, a very slow-speed double chair, easy to catch and jump-off. In all there are over 10 green trails to pick from, all easy-angled and offering good beginners’ skiing terrain. Though if you’re a grown-up, you might not appreciate the hoards of kids zipping around everywhere.

Smuggs has three Parks and a half-pipe. Beginners can start out at the small park on Morse. The more experienced head for the Zone on Sterling, or the halfpipe on Madonna.

Kid’s will think they’ve arrived in seventh heaven. For the very young, Treasures, the child care center, offers comprehensive child-care in an imaginative and homely environment. The older ones will love the ski-school with its extensive range of tailored kid-friendly courses. Off the slopes there’s lots for kids to do, including a huge indoor funzone, and a good-sized indoor heated swimming pool. Organised activities are on offer through the day till the late evening. Teenagers will appreciate the two teens centers – parents not allowed!

The village area at Smuggs has a substantial amount of slopeside accommodation; many condos border the lower ski slopes. Dining options are limited to a pizzeria, grille or restaurant in the center. Adult nightlife is limited to just a couple of bars, a favorite being Brewski’s, a kid-free haven. More choice is available in nearby Jeffersonville.

Why in 100 Best?

Great for families, with loads of activities for the kids. But if you’re not particularly fond of hoards of screaming children, it may be a good idea to avoid the village and Morse mountain areas.
