Plot

Set in modern New York City, Melvin, an obsessive, idiosyncratic, and unbearably rude man, but highly successful writer, compulsively visits the same diner each and every morning for his breakfast.

Carol, the only waitress who'll serve him, just about tolerates his fastidious nature and insensitive remarks - his erratic behaviour livens up her humdrum day.

At home, Melvin has two annoying irritations, Simon, his gay neighbour, and Simon's small dog.

Melvin's world is suddenly turned upside down. Simon is beaten up, and his dog is thrust into Melvin's care. And Carol leaves work to look after her sick son.

Why in 100 Best?

John Nicholson and Helen Hunt won Oscars for their acting, and deservedly so.
